The appearance, uses and meanings of maps have always fascinated me, and I\u2019m very excited to have found a means of incorporating them into my work. In the outer panels of this painting, I had a sense of being geologist, explorer and archeologist in one; excavating through dense layers of opaque and translucent wax to discover or reveal lakes and rivers; and in the centre, depicting the nascent scene for future navigators.\u2026<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_651\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-651\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"http:\/\/lauraculic.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/10\/pocahontas_20x201.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-651\" title=\"pocahontas_20x20\" src=\"http:\/\/lauraculic.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/10\/pocahontas_20x201.jpg\" alt width=\"300\" height=\"298\" srcset=\"https:\/\/lauraculic.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/10\/pocahontas_20x201.jpg 300w, https:\/\/lauraculic.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/10\/pocahontas_20x201-150x150.jpg 150w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\"><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-651\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Pocahontas, 20\u2033 x 20\u2033 encaustic, oil and image transfer on wood, available at <span class=\"caps\">XC<\/span> Art Restorations, Toronto<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span class=\"dquo\">\u201c<\/span><em>Pocahontas<\/em>\u201d was inspired by the Neil Young song of the same name, the lyrics of which I\u2019ve hand written, and hidden under layers and layers of wax. Barely discernible, but present, nevertheless.
