My paintings are based on many of the diverse ideas that inspire and interest me: ideas that include mapping and geography; exploration, travel and navigation; environmental conservation; ancient science; history; memory; the natural world and our place in it. And while they’re about these things, each painting is, in itself, and expression of a story.
The process of painting with beeswax and oil is a gradual and organic journey of building, excavation and exploration. The physical nature of this process is evident in the finished painting. And in turn, this physical evidence involves the viewer in the journey of discovery.
Within the many layers of wax and oil are incorporated fragments of text, type, paper, maps, symbols and numbers. These elements help organize and produce coherence out of abstraction and wilderness… much like a legend on a map or guideposts in navigating a journey… and invite viewers to form a relationship with the painting and to conceive their own imaginings, thoughts, memories and stories.

I paint full time in my cozy quiet studio, which is built into the garage of my Toronto home. Whenever I can, I nurture my restless spirit and refresh my painting inspiration by taking long motorcycle trips, camping with my kids, paddling or hiking.
I studied fine art and illustration, many moons ago, at the Ontario College of Art and Design. My paintings have won awards, and are part of many corporate and private art collections, as well as the Art Collection of the Government of Ontario.
